Release notes

Newest first. Upgrade with docker compose pull && docker compose up -d. Database migrations run automatically, but take a backup first.

  • License: PetHealth is now released under the MIT License.
  • Docs: a clear notice that PetHealth is meant for home/local networks and hasn’t been security-audited for internet exposure; remote access is documented through a VPN.
  • Fix: the calendar icon in checkup headers no longer sits on its own line above the date.

The biggest update so far: PetHealth now helps with the day-to-day, not just the record.

  • Dose tracking. Log each dose of an active treatment with one tap from the dashboard. The app reads the prescription (“every 8 hours”, “twice a day”) to show today’s progress (1/2, 2/2 ✓), records who gave each dose, and keeps a per-medication history with undo.
  • Parasite control. A new Parasites tab for internal, external and combined treatments, with product suggestions, “next dose in 1/3/6 months” shortcuts and reminders. The latest treatment of each type drives the reminder.
  • Email reminders. A daily digest by SMTP, sent only when something is due in 7 days, tomorrow or today, or became overdue 3 days ago. Configure it in My account, with a Send test email button.
  • Calendar feed. A private .ics link for your calendar app, with visits, boosters, parasite treatments and ongoing medications, and an alert the day before.
  • Allergies & chronic conditions, shown at the top of the profile, in the shared summary and in a highlighted box on the printable report.
  • Expenses. An optional cost on checkups, exams, vaccines and parasite treatments, and a new Expenses tab with totals per year and per category. Currency is a per-user setting.
  • Timeline. A new tab with the pet’s whole history in one chronological view, filterable by type.
  • Vet directory. A personal list of vets and clinics that autocompletes forms, fills in the clinic, shows a tap-to-call phone, and can be built from your history.
  • Export / import. Move a pet with all its records and files as a ZIP between accounts or installations.
  • The language choice is saved to your account (used by emails and the calendar).
  • The dashboard’s Upcoming care now includes parasite treatments, and Active treatments shows each medication’s daily dose progress.
  • The demo data now includes conditions, parasite treatments, costs, dose history and a vet directory.
  • The profile layout no longer overflows with the extra tabs, and the dashboard’s treatment rows work better on phones.
  • New optional variables: SMTP_HOST, SMTP_PORT, SMTP_SECURE, SMTP_USER, SMTP_PASS, SMTP_FROM, NOTIFY_HOUR, APP_URL.
  • Database migration 5 runs automatically.

1.0.0 — Family & self-hosting ready · October 22, 2026

  • Accounts and sharing. Each user has their own pets; share any pet as view only or can edit. Shared users can stop viewing a pet.
  • Vaccines, with boosters and status (up to date / due soon / overdue).
  • Weight history, with a chart; the current weight is always the latest entry.
  • Upcoming care on the dashboard: overdue and upcoming visits and boosters plus active treatments, with the most urgent item on each pet card.
  • Lab trend charts for any parameter measured more than once, with the reference range.
  • Printable report: the full medical history, ready to save as PDF.
  • Share summary: a plain-text health summary for the vet or the family.
  • More species: birds, rabbits, rodents, ferrets, reptiles, fish, horses and “other”, besides dogs and cats.
  • My account: change your password and sign out of all other devices.
  • Automatic backups: rotating SQLite snapshots in data/backups/, plus npm run backup.
  • Demo data: four example pets on the first start (SEED_DEMO=false to skip).
  • Single Docker image: the API and the web UI now ship in one container on port 3001 (previously two containers with nginx).
  • Uploads are only served to users with access to the pet, are validated by type and size, and are stored under random names.
  • Polished design: confirmation dialogs and toasts instead of browser pop-ups, an account menu, and better contrast in both themes.
  • Dates are handled in local time everywhere (no more “one day off” in negative time zones).
  • The default admin password must be changed on the first sign-in.
  • Rate-limited logins (LOGIN_RATE_LIMIT), and session revocation on password change.
  • Versioned database migrations; existing installs are upgraded automatically, and existing pets are assigned to the first user.
  • New variables: ALLOW_REGISTRATION, TRUST_PROXY, LOGIN_RATE_LIMIT, BACKUP_INTERVAL_HOURS, BACKUP_KEEP, SEED_DEMO, TZ, DATA_DIR.
  • Automated backend and frontend test suites and GitHub Actions CI (tests, build, Docker smoke test).
  • Complete visual redesign: the sage, tan and blue palette, the Nunito typeface, rounded cards, and a new dashboard, pet profile and checkup form.
